Who is John Galt?

John Galt is the fictional hero of “Atlas Shrugged,” Ayn Rand’s epic novel published in 1957. I first read Atlas Shrugged in college in 1974, and have just recently reread it after 35 years. For me, no other novel comes close to conveying the objectivist philosophy better than this book does.

John Galt epitomizes all that is glorious of capitalism in its purist form — innovation, self-reliance, and freedom from government interference. How would Galt view the current state of Greece, the Euro and the EMU’s intervention, or the more activist policies of global central banks? I have no idea but my limited knowledge of Objectivism is similar to my view of Ron Paul’s platform which are mostly favorable.

Would John Galt be more disturbed by the thousands of governmental regulations, or the government’s bailout of too-big-to fail ? Would he have greater dislike for the “Occupy Wall Street, or the “parasites” who “earned” huge bonuses after their banks were bailed out? I suspect that he would have little respect for the realities and compromises within both political parties.

In the end it’s up to each of us to determine who John Galt is themselves. For me, Ayn Rand wrote and prophecized over fifty years ago the great dilemma of our modern society. Ultimately we will be judged by history as to how we respond in answering that important question.

About Commish Greg

I have had a life long love affair with the New York Yankees and baseball period. In my retirement I've discovered the hobby of sports game simulation through online gaming. I also have collected cards and memorabilia since I was 7 years old in 1961. I inherited from my uncle the collections starting from 1956 - 1960 and in 1961 I started my own collecting. I started an online league through Out Of The Park Development and their game OOTP16. The name of the league is the Alternate History Baseball League and it began in the 1954 baseball season when I and fifteen others held an inaugural draft and began the AHBL league in earnest. In my blog I will review the AHBL league and also mix some pop culture and historic events from real life. I hope you enjoy !

I fear that our nation’s youth have long been shielded from Rand’s philosophy, or worse have been instructed to ridicule it.

Well we have definitely been instructed to ridicule it, and blindly. I once had a teacher who told me our country is in the mess we are in because of Rand’s philosophy. It is impossible to even argue with someone who believes so. Reason has no bearing.

Rand’s philosophy is what we are missing as a society. What we have today is control by the wealthy corporate welfare crowd and the personal welfare crowd. That and the constant segmenting and division in this country of one group against the other. The endless stream of victims that has become the populace.

You asked valid questions. I don’t know the answers myself.

What do you think?
