Un intended Consequences
We have in this country been playing with fire on our definition of marriage. And as they say when you play with fire you may get burned. The question of marriage should not be a question at all. The natural law of man and woman together is a state that is natural. According to religious conviction marriage is between one man and one woman period. Anything else is heretical and therefore unacceptable.
In trying to be reasonable and inclusive of people some states are recognizing same sex marriage. The Libertarian in me feels like it’s no business of the government who marries who. On the other hand from a religious perspective I remain solidly opposed to same sex marriage. Now from the state of Utah comes an old enemy of traditional marriage. Polygamists have won a new court battle which further expands marriage to include multiple partners. A US District judge has ruled in a 91 page decision that the part of the law regarding cohabitation violates their first amendment guarantee of freedom of religion.
This has been the fear for most who value and revere traditional marriage. The advances in marriage laws has now opened the door to other forms of cohabitation. It’s a sad state of affairs when marriage becomes elastic enough to mean anything. In doing so in the end marriage becomes nothing. The next challenge that could await us might breach gender, multiple partners and possibly animals. Frankly, as a society we can’t continue to accept abhorrent or deviant behavior as normal. If we don’t value traditional marriage between one man and one woman we must be prepared to accept the un intended consequences of a so called free society.
