Police The World No More !
There are U.S. military bases in half of the countries on the planet and U.S. military spending is 8 times larger than the military spending of any other nation in the world. Of course our country needs a strong military. But with our national debt exploding at an exponential rate we can no longer afford to continue to be the policemen of the world.
Our government seems obsessed with stamping out all terrorists wherever they may be found around the world. The fact is that we can’t get every idiot that wants to harm us. We can’t occupy or bomb all of the countries of the Middle East and accomplish the feat. We can no longer police the planet in order to be secure at home. Trying to be the police of the world is getting woefully expensive. We have run up almost 4 trillion dollars more debt since Barack Obama was elected. Many thought that Barack Obama would reduce our foreign entanglements, but instead he has greatly expanded them.
Armed Predator drones already operate in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen and Somalia. These airstrikes aren’t winning any hearts and minds around the world or especially in these nations and their neighbors. What we are doing is not working and is having the affect of fomenting even more terrorists.
Its time to fundamentally change our foreign policy. America is absolutely drowning in debt and we can no longer afford to police the world endlessly.
The rest of the world sees our actions as arrogance and ruthlessness. When the United States needs help the rest of the world is less inclined to give it to us. The U.S. government is essentially bankrupt and the U.S. financial system is on the verge of the collapse. We have got to stop spending so much money or we will crumble. Before the War on Terror our national debt was around 6 trillion dollars. Now it’s grown beyond any reason and sits at a whopping 16 trillion dollars.
Our military is in over 120 nations and has a total of 700 military bases that cost approximately 100 billion dollars each year to maintain. Our military spending is higher than the military spending of China, Russia, and all industrial nations combined. We account for nearly half of all military spending on the planet. The Pentagon currently gobbles up almost 60 percent of all discretionary spending by the federal government.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost U.S. taxpayers well over a trillion dollars. All the while the U.S. national debt is escalating out of control. Occupying and bombing nations doesn’t make us safer. In fact, it creates more enemies than it destroys. In addition, our military is spread so thin that there are questions about our ability to respond if a major threat happened.
Trying to police the world is foolish and Occupying and bombing countries all over the Middle East is a massive strategic mistake and it is creating a lot of new enemies around the world. Our military spending is contributing significantly to our national debt nightmare.
We build or rebuild bases and cities around the globe while many of ours deteriorate. We can rebuild our infrastructure and help our urban centers while providing millions of jobs doing so. If we pullback the troops and close the foreign bases we will be able to secure our borders at home. By using the savings from defense spending we can reallocate to bolster health care, infrastructure and debt reduction. All empires throughout history have succumbed to spending beyond their ability to keep up. Whether we talk about the Roman Empire, the British empire or the Soviets it’s true that they were all spread too thin. Perhaps we can avoid a similar fate if we wake up and smell the coffee as they say. Bring our troops home, secure our own health and welfare and reduce our debt spiral. It can be the key to an American renewal.
