Liberty For All

Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee
1747-1813 was a Scottish born British lawyer and writer. It is frightening how
timely these words written hundreds of years ago appear today:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it
simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will
continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote
themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the
majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the
public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due
to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship. The average
age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has
been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed
through the following sequence:  From
bondage to spiritual faith;  From
spiritual faith to great courage;  From
courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;  From
apathy to dependence;  From dependence
back into bondage.”

This historic quotation is fitting given the
nature of the ills that currently face America and its people. These words
by Lord Woodhouselee were written regarding the fall of the Athenian Republic
some 2,000 years prior to his remarks at the University of Edinborough
in 1787. The future is unavoidable but just what does our future hold is the
real question. Are we now living in a state between complacency and apathy,
with nearly forty percent of our population dependent upon the government?
Where we are today is a result of a journey that started around the time that
Lord Woodhouselee framed those words of wisdom some 235 years ago.

The problems and challenges that face our country
have roots that date back about 100 years or so, but we could go back to the
very founding of our nation for a true map. By examining our past and reviewing
our history as a nation we can discover where we went to get where we are. I
make the assumption that where we are as a nation today is unacceptable in
terms of the economy, human welfare, societal relations, foreign relations and
national defense.

About Commish Greg

I have had a life long love affair with the New York Yankees and baseball period. In my retirement I've discovered the hobby of sports game simulation through online gaming. I also have collected cards and memorabilia since I was 7 years old in 1961. I inherited from my uncle the collections starting from 1956 - 1960 and in 1961 I started my own collecting. I started an online league through Out Of The Park Development and their game OOTP16. The name of the league is the Alternate History Baseball League and it began in the 1954 baseball season when I and fifteen others held an inaugural draft and began the AHBL league in earnest. In my blog I will review the AHBL league and also mix some pop culture and historic events from real life. I hope you enjoy !
